QUEEN OF ROSÉ

VINARIA – AUSTRIA’S MAGAZINE FOR WINE CULTURE

Pia Strehn – the Queen of Rosé – has set new standards for rosé in Austria. She is a true expert when it comes to rosé and keeps a close eye on the great rosé wines of the world. Around 60% of the harvest is dedicated to rosé production, with Blaufränkisch at the center of it all.

However, the other wines should not be overlooked. Weißer Schotter – Chardonnay – Blaufränkisch Irrgarten and the 2019 Blaufränkisch Roter Schotter are truly powerful expressions.

All of this is only possible within a strong family structure. Brother Patrick is the winemaker, brother Andy is the head chef at the adjoining Schenkhaus/Buschenschank, and sister Pia represents the intellectual core of it all – the ambassador of the winery. And not to forget their mother Monika, who lends a helping hand wherever it is needed.

PFIFF UND ZUG

ROSÉ PRESS SPRING TASTING 2023

“Around 90 rosé wines from the 2022 vintage were submitted this year — and the victory goes to a true grand master of the rosé world: Pia Strehn. Together with her brothers Patrick and Andy, she runs a 50-hectare winery in Central Burgenland, where almost two thirds of the harvest is dedicated to rosé wines. The winning wine — a pristine Blaufränkisch with vibrancy and drive …”

SUCCESS

THE BEST WINES OF THE PAST FOUR YEARS: 6 TROPHIES

The Strehn winery from Deutschkreutz celebrated a true flood of trophies (2× gold, 3× silver, 1× bronze) for its rosé wines. Pia Strehn was overwhelmed: “We have achieved a goal we have been working towards for a very long time — to create the best rosé in Austria.”

VERY COOL

GERHARD HOFER IN PRESSE-SCHAUFENSTER

They didn’t make it easy for themselves. They tasted over 100 wines “from all over the world,” as Pia Strehn recounts, before embarking on their new rosé. The Strehn winery in Deutschkreutz is generally known for Blaufränkisch — as is typical for Central Burgenland. Now, they wanted to truly “understand” rosé. And one can say: they grasped it quickly.

The Blaufränkisch Rosé 2017 is fresh, crisp, and fruity. Very cool. Almost as cool as the elephant on the label. In fact, for me, the Strehn labels with their animal motifs are among the most playful and successful “from all over the world.” As Pia Strehn told me, the rosé comes from a “rosé vineyard” and is more of an overture — because as early as April, the next rosé is already on its way. “The big rosé sister,” says Pia, who is also a big sister herself. She runs the winery together with her mother and her brothers Patrick and Andy.

ABSOLUTELY GREAT

ADI SCHMIDT ON ELEFANT IM PORZELLANLADEN 2017

“Let me say it right away: this rosé is not summery and fresh, but very serious and absolutely great. It is a Blaufränkisch rosé from Deutschkreutz, salmon-colored, with dark aromatics (berry jelly, some cherries and herbs, bourbon vanilla), smoky and with fine acidity. A rosé with red wine character, fermented and matured in a 500-l-liter oak barrel. A rosé that can certainly be left to rest in the cellar for some time. A rosé that needs a Burgundy glass, because only then can it truly unfold … do not serve it too cold!”
